MAPANDA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Building stronger, sustainable communities in Malawi

In the Mapanda Development Community in Malawi’s Zomba District, Ronella Group is working with local communities to

explore how investment in infrastructure, livelihoods, environmental resilience and essential services can support a more sustainable future. Following a site visit in February 2026 and subsequent community consultation, priorities including electricity, clean water, roads, education and opportunities for young people have begun to shape a broader programme of community-led development.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & LOCAL PRIORITIES

Listening first. Building around real needs.

During Ronella’s February 2026 visit, discussions with community leaders and residents helped identify the issues that matter

most locally. Priorities included access to clean water and electricity, improved roads, education and better opportunities for

young people. These conversations are helping ensure that future investment is shaped around the needs and aspirations of

the community itself.

FROM CONSULTATION TO DELIVERY

The next stage is to translate these priorities into deliverable projects. Ronella is working with local partners to assess practical

solutions, identify appropriate technologies and develop routes to funding and implementation. The aim is not simply to provide

short-term assistance, but to build local capability and create solutions that communities can sustain over the long term.

Turning community priorities into practical action.

FROM PRIORITIES TO PROJECTS

Building the foundations for long-term change.

The priorities identified by the Mapanda community are now being translated into practical projects, beginning with essential

infrastructure and opportunities that can improve everyday life and support long-term economic independence.

THE PROJECT IS BUILT AROUND THREE PILLARS

01 - Community Social Services

This will cover sustainable energy and clean water supplies. It will also make provision for a two-room school and a Health Clinic.

02 - Economic Empowerment

Provision of farming irrigation, and the farming of fish, dairy cattle, poultry and pigs, with particular emphasis on the cold storage

of food.

03 - Environmental Sustainability

Designs will focus on incorporating land management, organic fertilisation, forestry and water management.

DELIVERING THE VISION

Turning plans into lasting community assets

Ronella’s approach is to develop each initiative as part of an integrated programme, combining essential community services

with economic opportunity and responsible management of natural resources. The objective is to create practical, locally

sustainable assets that continue delivering value long after implementation.

PLANNED COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE

Education & Skills Development

Health & Community Wellbeing

Development of local health facilities to improve access to essential care and support the long-term wellbeing of the Mapanda

community.

Sustainable Energy & Water

Development of reliable clean water, renewable energy and irrigation infrastructure to support households, community facilities

and productive agriculture.

Agriculture & Food Security

Environmental Stewardship

Development of education and training facilities designed to strengthen access to learning, build practical skills and create

greater opportunities for young people within the community.

Development of irrigation and diversified farming, including fish, dairy cattle, poultry and pigs, supported by improved food

storage to strengthen local food security and create sustainable livelihoods.

Land management, organic fertilisation, forestry and responsible water management will be incorporated into project design to

protect natural resources and support long-term environmental sustainability.

COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY

Projects will be delivered with local partners and community participation, creating opportunities for employment, training and

skills transfer while building the capability needed to sustain these initiatives over the long term.

Development shaped and governed by the community.

The proposed model places community participation, transparency and accountability at the centre of delivery. A household

survey will establish a clear baseline of local needs, followed by community representation to help identify priorities and ensure

future investment is directed fairly and effectively.

Clear separation of responsibilities

The proposed structure separates community representation, funding oversight and project delivery, helping ensure that

decisions remain transparent, resources are properly managed and local people remain directly involved in how projects

are developed and implemented.

Local delivery. Local capability.
